Choosing a Tablet Computer: Why I Bought a Galaxy Tab
There are many tablet computers on the market, and making the decision on which tablet to purchase can be very difficult.
In my case, the iPad was a very appealing option, but the sticker price was too high for our family. Apple has many applications (apps) and the new iCloud storage will allow for unlimited storage of programs and apps. I loved the iPad, but simply couldn't afford a $600 tablet computer.
On the other end of the cost spectrum was the Kindle Fire. I investigated that device, and was lured by the unlimited storage with Amazon's cloud storage system. The instant access to all of my books, videos, and other programs purchased by Amazon was also appealing. The cost was in the range of what we could afford, at approximately $200. The Fire is a small device, however, and lacks the full functionality of a tablet computer. There is no GPS, no camera, and almost no memory on the device.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab appeared on woot.com one day, for a price of $319. A little more than we wanted to spend, but the Galaxy Tab is a fully functional tablet computer. Camera, video, GPS, 10.1" screen size, and 16GB of memory. There is another model available which contains 32GB of memory, for those who desire more capacity. The unit on woot was refurbished, but came with a "rebirth" certificate, guaranteeing the tablet would look and function as if it were new.
I made the decision to purchase the tablet, and it arrived at our house within a week.

Unboxing the Refurbished Galaxy Tab
The refurbished tablet was as promised - a tablet computer with no defects and perfect functionality. The device came with a "rebirth certificate" as a guarantee against any potential problems. The box contained the Galaxy Tab, instruction booklet, ear buds, USB cable, and charging device.
Charging and Using the Device for the First Time
The Galaxy Tab charged fairly quickly, and an image of a full, green battery appeared once the tablet was completely charged. Once charged, the tablet is turned on by depressing the power key for approximately 20 seconds. Once on, the tablet prompts the user to select a wireless network and to set up a Google account on the device. The set-up process was straightforward, and I was able to use the tablet within a few minutes of turning it on.

Applications on the Galaxy Tab
I downloaded Amazon's android application app, and downloaded a few free applications like Angry Birds and a finger painting studio for my kids (among others). Angry Birds played beautifully, filling up the screen nicely without any distortion.
Unfortunately, many android apps are sized for mobile phones, and do not fill the screen of the 10" tablet. The finger painting studio I downloaded was too small, as it was sized for a mobile phone screen. I uninstalled that particular app and found another painting studio application that would fit the larger screen size. When downloading applications for the Galaxy Tab, make sure the app has been designed for the tablet computer and not a mobile phone.
Web Browsing on the Galaxy Tab
The browser on the Galaxy Tab has been described as "sluggish" by those with a highly technical background. I didn't notice any unusual sluggishness - it seemed to load new pages quickly. Video played well, though I did have one error while trying to play a youtube video. I closed out the browser and tried again, and the video loaded perfectly.
Photo and Video on the Galaxy Tab
The Galaxy Tab features a 3 megapixel camera on the back of the device, and a 2 megapixel camera on the front of the device. The rear camera is meant to take quality photographs and comes equipped with a flash, while the front camera is intended for use with video calls or as a webcam.
A Satisfied Customer
While I am not a technical analyst on tablet computers, I am a typical customer. I was looking for a sleek, sophisticated tablet computer that wouldn't break the bank. The refurbished Galaxy Tab fit the bill perfectly - it is lightweight, sleek, and powerful.

It was definitely a good deal, Crewman6! A little more than we had intended on spending (we were originally looking at the Kindle Fire for the price), but within the upper limit of our budget. Since we use a lot of apps for the kids (like speech therapy games), the bigger screen on the Galaxy Tab is nice. The on-board memory is great, too, since we don't always have access to wi-fi on the go!
Very nice...I like the unboxing and demo. Angry Birds always makes for a good one. ;)
I have an iPad but an Android phone, and have to say the pressure these Android tablets are putting on the iPad is great. Competition is good! I don't think anyone has really come up with a good text input method yet (like Swype for Android phones) but hopefully that's coming next.
Thanks, livelonger! I was originally looking at the Kindle Fire, but realized it is more of an amped-up e-reader than a fully functional tablet computer. When the refurbished Galaxy Tab popped up on woot, we snagged one. A full-price Galaxy Tab costs the same as an iPad, so if we had to pay the entire price, we would have gone with the iPad. My father-in-law has a Thrive, and he seems to like it (though the Galaxy Tab is much thinner than the Thrive).
Yes, I've seen a couple discounted Android tablets on woot, too. Given the strength of Apple's brand alone, I think most of the Androids will have to price at a discount to the iPad, which is great for buyers, since the feature set is not lacking whatsoever.
Competition is great for driving prices down. The Android Honeycomb is a great operating system, and the Galaxy Tab is pretty snappy. Our neighbors have an iPad, and the Galaxy is the closest tablet in terms of features and capabilities. Now, my only problem is getting the tablet out of the kids' hands!
Great review. I got a 10" tab this past Christmas, mostly to use as an e-reader. As I didn't know if I would like the whole thing about e-books, we bought a cheap one for about half what you paid for the Galaxy.
I've about decided to upgrade in the near future, however. I like the whole ebook thing, and have used the tablet as a browser while on the road as well. Something a little better than what I've got would be nice.
We really love our tablet, Wilderness. I do use it as an e-reader sometimes, but we often use it for entertaining kids in waiting rooms and on long car trips. I had no idea how often we would use it for that purpose, and it has been a lifesaver during more than one piano lesson (my younger son would go nuts during the lesson, and we can settle him down with an educational app during my older son's lesson).
I love the Galaxy Tab - it uses an Android operating system and it is wonderful for us so far. I do wish there were a few more speech therapy type apps (there are MANY on the iPad). We liked the price of the refurbished Galaxy Tab and are very happy with it!

Great review. I couldn't afford the retail-priced Galaxy Tab, so wound up getting my wife the GTab, and modding it with Cyanogen. For me, she got the Fire, because all I really needed was a souped-up ebook reader.
I would have loved to found this deal when the time was right!!
